Volunteer Opportunities Join the Fun...Volunteer! In 2007, 2,729 individuals contributed 46,386.50 hours of volunteer service to the ACC Department of Leisure Services. Every day volunteers can be found throughout the department sharing their time, expertise, and energy. The following events/programs will need the assistance of volunteers to be successful. Trail Guide TrainingJoin us for a fun morning to learn how to lead elementary- aged children on trail hikes through the nature center trails. Trail walks for the schools begin in mid-August and occur Tuesday - Friday from 9:30 –11:30 a.m. Ages: 18 years and older Dates: Saturday, August 23, Thursday, August 28, Friday, August 29. Trail KeepersThe Athens-Clarke County Department of Leisure Services’ Natural Resources Division is recruiting volunteers for its Trail Keepers program. Sandy Creek Nature Center, Sandy Creek Park, and the Greenways and Riverside Parks feature more than 15 miles of trails through thousands of acres of wetlands, woodlands, and upland forests. These trails need constant care and upkeep to keep them in good shape for everyone to enjoy. Citizens can help by adopting a trail. The Trail Keepers program is designed for individuals, groups, or families. Interested parties adopt a trail for 6 months and commit to walk the trail at least once each month, performing any necessary light maintenance. Training and tools provided. Volunteers will be recognized for their commitment our local natural resources and receive a Trail Keepers patch. This is a great opportunity to work together in the outdoors on a project that benefits some of Athens-Clarke County’s most popular natural areas. Not a huge commitment, just a day in the woods each month. Soccer CoachesA co-ed recreational league designed for players to learn and develop Fundamental soccer skills. Ages: Micro (Under 6), PeeWee (Under 8), Mites (Under 10), Midgets (Under 12), Junior (Under 14) and Senior (Under 16). Midget, Junior and Senior divisions may play teams from surrounding counties. All teams coached by volunteers. Team jersey provided. Homework Helper/Afterschool Program Volunteer (resumes in August)Volunteers are needed to assist school aged children with their homework assignments and other planned activities at various Leisure Services facilities, including Broadacres, Parkview, and Rocksprings Neighborhood Centers and Lay Park Volunteers are asked to commit to working one day a week, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Tuesdays-Fridays. This is an ideal volunteer activity for an education major or anyone interested in working with children! Natural Resources Volunteer Workday Join us for work days at one of our many facilities including Sandy Creek Park, Greenway, and Sandy Creek Nature Center. Lend a hand in beautifcation projects that make the Athens community better. Regular volunteer work days take place the second Saturday of every month. Athens Creative Theatre Volunteer UshersYou don't have to be on stage to be part of the show...become a volunteer usher! Athens Creative Theatre needs volunteers to usher and sell concessions at its productions throughout the year. Shows are presented at either the Morton Theatre or at Quinn Hall at Memorial Park. Animal Caretaker OrientationDo you love working with animals? Then Leisure Services can use you! Volunteers play an important role in caring for the critters who call Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail and Sandy Creek Nature Center home. Volunteer to help care for the critters at SCNC. Orientation will give volunteers a general overview of duties and will be followed by animal care training. Disc Golf Volunteer Work DaysDo you have a group or organization that needs a project? Or do you just want to help keep the Sandy Creek Park Disc Golf course in great condition?
