Active Aging Conference 2010
Plans are underway for the third annual Active Aging Conference in Athens. This event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 10 from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Athens Area Council on Aging located at 135 Hoyt Street.

This year's speakers are Dr. Farris Johnson and Dr. Richard Panico. Dinner will be catered by the Classic City Caf&eacjte; Catering. Registration is $25 per person and is now being accepted. Registration deadline is July 30. Forms are available at below or at the Council on Aging.

Additionally, nominations are being accepted for the Fred A. Birchmore Award for Active Aging which honors a resident of the Athens area who exemplifies the goals of the Athens Area Active Aging Coalition to enjoy life and enhance health by being physically and socially active after age 50. The award is named in honor of Fred Birchmore, an Athenian who bicycled around the world in the 1930s and continues to be active today, at age 98. Fred has inspired thousands of people with his energy, enthusiasm and positive outlook on life. He has given of himself to promote wellness and physical activity, including the donation of beautiful forested land to Athens-Clarke County for the expansion of Memorial Park. Today, a trail that bears his name winds through the park to the hand-built wall surrounding Fred's house. The award will be presented at the 3rd Annual Athens Area Active Aging Connection conference. The deadline for award nomination submissions is July 16.
