July is National Recreation and Parks Month
July is Parks and Recreation Month 2010Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association has designated the month of July as Recreation and Parks Month. Recreation facilities and parks across the country annually use July to celebrate the kick-off of summer programming as well as a time to pull their communities together to volunteer, get involved in great outdoor physical activities and advocate for parks and recreation.
As we observe Recreation and Parks Month, we recognize the vital contributions of employees and volunteers throughout the country and abroad who assist public parks and recreation facilities. These dedicated supporters keep public parks clean and safe for visitors, organize and coach youth sports teams, provide educational programming on health, nutrition, first aid and gardening, advocate for more open space and better trails, and fundraise for local improvements. They ensure that public parks and recreation facilities are safe and accessible places for all citizens to enjoy.
Movie in the Park - The SandlotOutdoor movies make a return appearance at Southeast Clarke Park, located at 4440 Lexington Road, on Friday, July 30 as the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services wraps up its month long celebration of July is National Parks and Recreation Month with this special event.
ACC Leisure Services celebrates the Great American Pastime with the presentation of the classic The Sandlot. The movie will be presented on a 36 foot inflatable screen featuring state of the art projection and stereo equipment.
The rain date is Saturday, July 31.
Families are encouraged to arrive early and bring blankets and lawn chairs. Fun begins at 7:00 p.m. to include music and outdoor games. The movie will be presented at approximately 9:00 p.m.
The concessions stand will be open with soft drinks, pizza, and popcorn available for purchase.
This event is FREE and open to the public. Children, 12 and under, must be accompanied by an adult. No alcohol or smoking is permitted in the park. Pets are not allowed at this event.

Get To Know Your Parks ToursAll aboard! The Athens-Clarke County Department of Leisure Services is sponsoring a special tour of facilities and parks as part of the month long celebration of “July is Parks and Recreation Month.” Whether you are new to Athens or just interested in seeing all the playscapes, there is something for everyone.
Citizens are invited to hop on the ACC Leisure Services mini bus and enjoy an informational tour of the department’s parks Saturdays in July at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Each tour features a different theme. The final tour set for Saturday, July 31 is “ACC Leisure Services 101” and will provide an overview of the entire department.
Each guided tour is led by staff from the award-winning department, which includes being named “Agency of the Year” for the past consecutive five years by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association.
