Arts Unleashed 2010

ACC Leisure Services Presents Arts Unleashed 2010
Athens Clarke County Leisure Services Department's Arts Division presents the third annual Arts Unleashed with performance and visual art in untraditional locations across Athens including bus stops, retail stores, and more from April 12 through June 28.

Arts Unleashed programming encourages artists to develop innovative and original projects to be presented in unconventional arts venues across the community. Arts Unleashed projects contain an element of spontaneity, popping up across the city as pleasantly surprising arts experiences in the places where people live, work, and play.

This year’s artists are as original as ever. Erin Meredith pieces together magazine clippings into a collage during rush hour at the multi-modal transit center from April 12 through 16. Students from Didi Dunphy's Professional Practices Seminar at the University of Georgia will assemble and curate an exhibition of artworks appearing in downtown Athens retailer windows from April 20 to May 2 as well as lead an art walk on April 25 that meets under the UGA Arch at 6:00 p.m. Amanda Burk will mix fact and fiction with improvisational comedy in her performance piece with misguided tours downtown on May 15 and 16. Jamie Calkin will sketch, paint, and give passersby a chance to try their hand at creating their own art at bus stops across Athens from May 25 to June 11.

Arts Unleashed Receives State Award
The Athens-Clarke County Department of Leisure Services Arts Division was recently honored by the Georgia Assembly of Community Arts Agencies (GACAA) with the prestigious Kaleidoscope Award that is given annually to a program deemed to have a recognizable impact on its community.

The award was accepted by Stuart Miller, ACC Leisure Services Arts Division Administrator at the organization’s conference in Augusta.

The award recognizes the Arts Unleashed program which promotes visibility of the arts in the community by putting artists and art activities right in the path of Athenians as they go about their everyday lives. In the process, the program raises the awareness of local residents about the wealth of arts experiences available in Athens.

Kaleidoscope is a competitive award The GACAA is a statewide network of more than 100 community arts organizations.
